The Photovoice Method Intensive School is a new PhotovoiceWorldwide program. Intended to support first time facilitators, practitioners and researchers in their photovoice journey, this intensive two weeks-training provides all the tools necessary to successfully plan, organize and conduct a project safely and ethically.

This comprehensive instruction guide provides all the basic (and more!) information to get you started with photovoice. From understanding the roots of the method, to planning your sessions, to understanding who your stakeholders are and how to interact with your group, this virtual, self-paced course provides a strong foundation in photovoice methodology and supports self-directed learning by leaving room for questions. itioners and researchers in their photovoice journey, this intensive two weeks-training provides all the tools necessary to successfully plan, organize and conduct a project safely and ethically.
Session 1: Welcome and Q&A. Introduction to the photovoice planning page
This session is your chance to start asking questions, get acquainted with your summer-school classmates, and learn more about the photovoice planning page, an indispensable resource when planning your own photovoice project.
Session 2: Demystifying the scoping literature review process
This session demystifies the photovoice scoping literature review process by sharing concepts, a replicable process, and practical tools available to all. Lecture, discussion, and hands-on practice in real-time will empower you to be successful at planning a scoping literature review that will inform and help you plan for your photovoice project.
Session 3: Photovoice ethics and safety + IRB.
Learn more about photovoice and ethical standards of participatory research, how to plan for your project so it meets these important requirements, and how to ensure safety for your group as well as for the people being photographed. You will work on an IRB (Institutional Review Board) and in addition, have the opportunity to discuss the ethical questions and conditions that make a photovoice project successful.
Session 4: Adopting an Anticolonial approach to photovoice
As a community of photovoice practitioners, we must work to avoid an ahistorical application of the method, which could perpetuate or reinforce systemic oppressions. Dr. Jennifer Fricas will introduce fundamental concepts underlying an anticolonial approach and then walk each participant through a collaborative analysis of their photovoice project to determine how to incorporate anticolonial practices during each phase. Session topics include: colonialism-related definitions, positionality, right epistemological relationships, developing collaborative community partnerships, power dynamics in recruiting, and anticolonial data collection.
Sessions 5 & 6: Photovoice case histories and facilitation: hands-on work 1 and 2
In these two sessions, a variety of project scenarios and case histories will be presented, whereupon participants will be asked to take on the role of project facilitator. The scenarios will be carefully chosen to incorporate some of the challenges and most common situations one might find themselves in during a photovoice project. In these engaging, interactive, sessions, classmates will work in small groups, contributing to both the brainstorming and implementing of solutions.
Session 7: Photovoice evaluation.
In this hands-on, interactive, skill-building session we will provide real-life examples of how photovoice been successfully used to strengthen data collection and add unique perspectives and cross-cultural voices to evaluations. We will also spend time brainstorming possible ways of using photovoice that are specific to participants’ own work.
Session 8: Facilitating photo discussions- Hands on activity
In this session attendees will try facilitating discussions on photographs and photo-taking activities. Group and individual facilitation techniques will be shared and modelled as scaffolding opportunities for future work.
Session 9: Completing the photovoice planning page for your project – Supported by photovoice mentors
This session is a tailored class designed to support you in finalizing the planning of your photovoice project. You will have the opportunity to meet individually with different mentors who will share feedback and extend their assistance so you can feel confident about your project before the end of the Intensive School.
