Laura Sherwood is a passionate photovoice practitioner and has worked as a professional photographer and trained in Photovoice methods through praxis and research. She is the founder of Transformative Arts Project, a nonprofit founded to empower communities through art. She has facilitated Photovoice projects with youth and seniors in Frederick, Maryland. Laura has a PhD. in Human Development from Fielding Graduate University.
Her research examined how female activists utilized art to empower the voices of marginalized communities in India. Her dissertation included a documentary in which she incorporated video clips, interviews, and images from her research to emphasize the value of integrating Arts-based methods and methodologies throughout the research process. She has facilitated several arts-based programs that enhance individual and collective reflexivity.
