Facilitating Photovoice: Practical and Creative Approaches

Getting real, applicable, and easy to incorporate guidance on designing and implementing this method was invaluable. Each step was broken down to ensure we have a good grasp of the why and how of each step.
After taking this course, I feel much more prepared to plan and conduct my photovoice study for my master’s thesis, and also feel less alone in doing so.
This course is a valuable opportunity to deepen a researcher’s or program director’s understanding of the power of the Photovoice method.

This interactive online professional development training prepares facilitators to lead photovoice sessions with confidence and creativity. By the end of the course, participants will have a conceptual and practical understanding of the photovoice facilitator’s role. They will be equipped to guide groups through the important steps of the photovoice process—from connecting as a group to brainstorming images, developing photo prompts, discussing photos and experiences, creating captions, and preparing to disseminate their work.

This course engages learners through a blend of lecture, arts-based practices, hands-on activities, and recommended readings intended to strengthen photovoice facilitation skills and support co-researchers at every stage of their photovoice journey.

Upon course completion, participants will be ready to foster meaningful photovoice participation using a toolbox of practical tools and strategies adaptable to diverse photovoice contexts.

The 3 sessions are:

  • Session 1: Connection and Content: Participatory Activities with Photography
  • Session 2: Developing Photo-Taking Prompts and Leading Photo Discussions
  • Session 3: Storytelling, Captions, and Arts-Based Expression
