Session 1: Welcome and Q&A. Introduction to the photovoice planning page

This session is your chance to start asking questions, get acquainted with your summer-school classmates, and learn more about the photovoice planning page, an indispensable resource when planning your own photovoice project.

Ethics are at the core of any photovoice project. In this interactive session, we will explore ethical considerations through hands-on work with real-world case scenarios, that critically engage with issues of consent, representation, and safety. Through discussion and problem-solving, you will gain tools to navigate ethical challenges and ensure that your photovoice work aligns with best practices in participatory research.

Engaging participants in a photovoice project goes beyond taking photos—it is about fostering meaningful collaboration and inclusion. This session introduces strategies, both arts-based and non-arts-based, to encourage participation, deepen reflection, and support diverse ways of expression. You will discuss and gain hands-on experience with engagement techniques designed to make photovoice projects more dynamic, inclusive, and participant-driven.

Facilitating meaningful discussions around photographs is a key skill for any photovoice facilitator. This session will equip you with practical techniques to guide co-learners in interpreting and discussing images in ways that encourage storytelling, reflection, and collective analysis.

A compelling caption can transform an image, adding depth and personal meaning. In this session, we will explore creative and participatory approaches to caption writing, helping participants move beyond descriptions to craft captions that capture emotions, themes, and lived experiences to find their own voice. Hands-on exercises will provide the opportunity to experiment with different captioning techniques.

What happens after the photos are taken and captions prepared? This session will guide you through the vital process of analyzing photovoice data and identifying common themes. We will consider different strategies for sharing and disseminating findings. We will explore creative and impactful ways to present photovoice work, from community exhibits to policy engagement, ensuring that co-learners’ voices reach wider audiences. .

A well-structured photovoice project requires thoughtful planning. In this session, you will work through case scenarios to develop a solid project framework, considering elements such as recruitment, logistics, facilitation, and ethical considerations. This hands-on approach will help you refine your photovoice project planning skills, anticipate challenges before they arise, and identify supports.

Photovoice should not reproduce extractive or colonial research practices. This session will introduce key principles of an anticolonial approach to photovoice, helping participants critically examine their own work and consider power dynamics, representation, and epistemology. Through guided discussion and reflection, you will explore ways to integrate anticolonial methods throughout your project’s lifecycle.

This session is a tailored class designed to support you in finalizing the planning of your photovoice project. You will have the opportunity to meet individually with a photovoice mentor who will share their feedback and expertise so you can feel confident about your project before the end of the Summer School.
