My name is Evan Canellakis, and I live Cornwall, Connecticut, USA, in a small community called Yelping Hill. I graduated from the New England Institute of technology in March 2020 with an associate’s degree in software engineering. In summer 2021 I had the opportunity to complete an internship at Photovoice Worldwide. My assignment was to edit videos and create trailers for social media and YouTube.

As an intern, I was given the opportunity to learn about photovoice by taking the course “Talking with Pictures.” The course taught me a lot about taking pictures that told a story, and using captions to expand on the meaning of the picture. During the course, I got a first-hand taste of what it is like to participate in a photovoice project. Below is an example of a photo I shared during the course. It symbolizes Past, Present, and Future, and how I can learn from past experiences. The leaf, frozen in time, symbolizes how this was once the present when I started the internship, and how, going forward, I can use what I have learned for the future.

During my internship, I learned a lot about the video/content creating process, such as how to sculpt a video to fit the message I want to deliver to my audience. I also learned how to take longer videos and edit them down into a short trailer using Adobe Premiere pro, adding tags and features along the way. I received a lot of help and instruction, including one-on-one brainstorming with my mentor, as well as sharing the finished product with the broader team for comment. I felt supported throughout the process, especially when I was stuck, because I knew I could always reach out.

The best part of my internship was getting to know a diverse community and hearing their stories. I am so thankful I had the opportunity to meet amazing people, with different lived experiences. I especially enjoyed working with the Photovoice Worldwide Team, from whom I was able to learned and grow so much.

My internship with PhotovoiceWorldwide has impacted my current and future goals positively. By allowing me to expand my creativity and my knowledge of video editing, this experience has already helped to advance my career in video creation and editing. I would recommend an internship at photovoice Worldwide to anyone.
